The truth is you can NEVER do that ’update’. Mountain Lion can’t be installed as an ’upgrade’ over OS 10.5.8. The minimum requirement to install OS 10.8 as an upgrade is OS 10.6.8. Here are your options…
-- Buy the DVD below. After installing it as an upgrade over OS 10.5.8, use Software Update under the Apple logo menu. Then you will have iTunes that works with iPhone 5.
-- Call Apple at 1-800-myapple and ask to buy OS 10.7 (’Lion’). They will give you a code to download and install it. Even then, you have to follow the article at the second link below to make an installer DVD or USB disk and either erase and install or create a new partition with Disk Utility to install Lion separately from OS 10.5.8.
